Excel Order List to Filled POS Cart in Minutes

The problem

A parenting retail store processed bulk book orders by searching the POS for each title and adding it to the cart, one by one, from a spreadsheet. Slow, mind-numbing, and error-prone — exactly the kind of work that shouldn’t be done by a person.

The build

The bot reads model numbers and quantities from the client’s Excel file, then drives their own installed Chrome browser through DevTools protocol — no separate automated browser, no webdriver to keep updated, and the client’s existing POS login session just works.

For each row it searches the model, handles both of the POS’s behaviours (some searches auto-add, others need a click), and sets the exact quantity in the cart. Model numbers are normalised before matching, because the POS formats them inconsistently. Ambiguous matches and missing items are skipped and reported in a final summary — and the bot deliberately never submits checkout, so the client always reviews the cart before confirming.

Delivered as a standalone executable with a simple config file.

The result

Bulk order entry went from a manual session to minutes of unattended work. Delivered in under six hours — the client ordered their next automation the following day.
